Fry
We seem to have an invisible sign over our house that only homeless dogs and cats can see and read. It must say something like, “All desperate dogs and cats, free lunch at this home!”
This time, instead of a cat showing up, it was a dog.
Catherine had taken the day off since she wasn’t feeling well and noticed a dog in our backyard. It was a young adolescent dog, bigger then a puppy but still a juvenile. I’d guess he was somewhere around 8 months old or so. He wasn’t wearing a collar, was filthy as heck and really friendly. She took one of Hoshi’s beds and put it out on the back deck for him, along with some food and water and left him alone.
He was still there at 7:30 in the evening when I got home, curled up in the bed sleeping away. He woke up immediately when we opened the patio door and gave us both a very happy hello. He was so dirty when I touched him that my hand was instantly grimy and nasty. Even though we had only known him for less then an afternoon, he put up no fight when he was picked up and put in the bathtub for a bath. While I was scrubbing the stink off him, he was sneaking smootchies on my cheek and ear whenever my head was close enough to him. He turned the tub brown, but I managed to wash off most of the layers of dirt from him. Enough that you could at least touch him without a hazmat suit.
He’s definitely underweight, his bones poke out from under his skin and he was ravenously hungry. He scarfs down his food and is always looking for more. It’s also clear his life hasn’t been real happy. He’s desperate for attention, and extremely submissive, slinking along the floor when he approaches you and immediately rolling onto his back when you touch him. His prior owner clearly needs an ass kicking.
Catherine gave him the name Fry, as in Philip J Fry from Futurama. He’s a bit dim and really goofy so it seemed a great name. It’s been a few days now, and Hoshi isn’t real happy about sharing her attention, but things are calming down. Fry is getting more comfortable in the house. He is house broken, which was a nice surprise considering the rest of his condition. He’s positive that he’s a lap dog, loves getting treats and attempts to play with grumpy Hoshi. He’s started to walk around the house comfortably now instead of a slinking crouch. He’s also started sleeping like a log. In the beginning, he would only sleep for a short while, then wake up full of the need for attention and re-assurance. Last night, he was a real bed hog and had to be motivated to get out of bed this morning.
He’s a really great dog. He shows no aggression and is brimming with playful enthusiasm. All he’s looking for is someone to love him back, a lap to watch TV on, and a bed full of blankets with a warm owner to snuggle next to.
I think we have the perfect person for him and they’ll do great together.
